Introduction
This year it will be the 42nd Anniversary of the 1967 referendum and with the momentous sorry apology of 2008 by Prime Minster Kevin Rudd, indigenous affairs is a hot political and social topic.
As a result your curator at the museum has asked you to put together a team of four talented people to research and help build a new exhibit called the “Human rights: making a stand for what right”. As the curator has decided that this will be the big budget project of the year, you are thrilled to be a part of it and hopefully get your name up in lights! The event you and your team have been assigned to research is the 1967 referendum. As historians you will look at the differing perspectives and overall impact of this event in Australian indigenous history.
The new exhibit is going to include a Human rights hall of fame and it your job to research and present your finding to the curators panel why the 1967 referendum should or should not be included as a shining moment in Australia’s human rights history . Many people in Australia regard the referendum as a turning point in terms of Australian politics, society and indigenous relations. However others feel that referendum gained them little and it was a referendum based in political grandstanding rather than actual action on the issues that were effect indigenous communities. These two conflicting view points are what you as researchers and historians will have to consider
Taking all of this into consideration you and your team will research, analyse and discuss that impact, motivation and result of the referendum and present your finding to the panel.
A hall of fame is very important institution in Australia from sporting to music a hall of fame showcases and represents Australia. Remember The National History museum of Australia is one of the nation’s most important cultural institutions .So make your judgements wisely.
Good luck!
Imagine you’re a researcher for the National Museum of Australia and you have landed a once in a life time, career making job!
